Introduction and Number Review

This lesson will teach you the days of the week, how to specify certains days and dates as well as tell time.

In the previous lesson, you learned how to count. Now we will apply what you learned in that lesson so, if you skipped lesson 5 or feel you need to review it again, please go back to lesson 5.

Telling Time

Asking the Time

Here is how to ask, "What time is it?"

Nan ji desu ka?

The person's reply would be similar to the following:

Roku-ji nijuppun mae desu.

Breaking Down the Question

Nan (what) ji (time/hour) desu ka? (is it?)

This could be expanded to be just a little more specific.

Ima wa nan ji desu ka? = What time is it now?

Breaking Down the Answer

Roku-ji (The hour is 6) nijuppun (20 minutes) mae (before) desu. (it is)

In other words, it is 20 before six or 5:40.

Time Counters

Hours

The counter for hours is ji.

Minutes

The counter for minutes is pun.
