Alcatraz is probably the most famous prison in the US and is one of San Francisco's most famous tourist attractions. Surrounded by the cold waters of the San Francisco Bay, Alcatraz was considered to be escape-proof. Prisoners that managed to escape their confines were never found and presumed drowned in the waters of The Bay.

Pier 39 is located a short distance east of the main Fisherman's Wharf area. On the Pier you will find numerous shops, restaurants, and entertainment. the place to go if you want fresh crab meat. There are many sit-down and sidewalk seafood restaurants where you can grab a quick bite to eat or some more formal. There is much to see and experience at Fisherman's Wharf.

Fisherman's Wharf is the place to go if you want fresh crab meat. There are many sit-down and sidewalk seafood restaurants where you can grab a quick bite to eat or something more formal. There is much to see and experience at Fisherman's Wharf.

During your walk along the wharf area you will find numerous small fishing and tour boats. You can choose to take a Bay tour from one of the many smaller tour boats or choose one of the larger tour fleets also located on the wharf area.

The Cannery offers a variety of restaurants, outdoor seating and entertainment as well as shopping. Be sure to try a crepe at Crepes a la Carte or enjoy any one of the other fine restaurants.

Ghirardelli Square is the place to go if you are looking for chocolate. Ghirardelli chocolate is still made on site and you you can see some of the process at the ice cream and chocolate shop. There are many other fine shops and restaurants located here. This is one of the many great stops along the wharf heading toward Hyde Street and the Hyde Street Pier.

Hyde Street Pier has a variety of old ships you can tour; old sailing and steam-powered ships. Naturally there are also some shops neaby in which you can find seafaring merchandise and souvenirs.

Yerba Buena Gardens is located downtown near the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Yerba Buena Performing Arts Center offers a variety of plays, exhibits, and other special showings while the Sony Metreon offers shopping, restaurants, game center, a Loews movie theater with IMAX, and a special childrens adventure based on Maurice Sendak's story 'Where The Wild Things Are.'

Union Square is The place to go for upscale shopping. Neiman Marcus, Macy's, and Tiffany Jewelers, just to name a few, are all located around the Union Square area. Union Square is a great place to sit down and rest while gathering a second wind for another round of shopping. Unique performance artists can be found here so be sure to be nice and tip them.

China Town is another main attraction in San Francisco. There is a very large and very well established Chinese community in San Francisco. There are many Chinese shops and restaurants located throughout the city but none more so than in China Town itself. You will definitely want to walk through this part of town and visit the many small shops that line the streets.
